Spend 8 days cruising through the lush countryside of West Bengal on one of the most sacred rivers in the world. Take a cycle rickshaw to the terracotta temples and unique Shiva temple in Kalna. Explore the deserted town of Gaur, which was once one of India‘s great cities.

Travel Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival - Kolkata

On arrival in Kolkata be transferred to your hotel. Stay the next two nights at Taj Bangal.

DAY 2

Kolkata

Today, explore the vibrant city of Kolkata starting with Howrah Bridge, located over the Hoogli River is said to be the busiest bridge of the world. Later, venture to the flower Market, underneath Howrah Bridge is one of the Asia’s largest wholesale flower markets. Thousands of people gather here daily to buy and sell flowers and plants followed by Victoria Memorial, a splendid architectural structure which was built in the early 20th Century in memory of Queen Victoria.

DAY 3

Kolkata to ABN RajMahal Cruise

Be transferred from your hotel to embark and sail at midday. Sail past the old Danish colony of Serampore to Barrackpore land and take a walk through the cantonment past the Semaphore Tower. Stay the next seven nights on board ABN RajMahal.

DAY 4

ABN RajMahal Cruise

Visit the 18th century church and Dupleix’s House containing a small museum then later reboard your ship and cruise upstream leaving the urban sprawl behind.

DAY 5

ABN RajMahal Cruise

After breakfast, land at the country town of Kalna and take cycle rickshaws to see a group of some of Bengal’s most attractive terracotta temples, as well as the unique Shiva temple. Sail on through the night to a mooring near Matiari.

DAY 6

ABN RajMahal Cruise

This morning visit the brass working village of Matiari where you can see the whole primitive process of beating out brass water pots and other vessels. Later cruise on and visit the battlefield of Plassey where in 1757 Clive’s defeat of Siraj-ud-Daulah changed the course of Indian history.

DAY 7

ABN RajMahal Cruise

Today, walk to the Khushbagh, a peaceful Moghul-style garden enclosing the tombs of Siraj-ud-Daulah and his family. Continue a little way upstream to where the Nawab’s great Hazarduari Palace, built by an English architect.

DAY 8

ABN RajMahal Cruise

Admire the delightful sleepy village of Baranagar with three gorgeous miniature terracotta temples to which you walk through the fields. Continue up the Hooghly, here a charming waterway twisting and turning between banks lined with mustard fields and mango orchards.

DAY 9

ABN RajMahal Cruise

Disembark and take a full day excursion by road to Gaur. This quiet, deserted place was once one of India’s great cities home to plentiful remains of mosques, palaces and gateways.

DAY 10

ABN RajMahal Cruise to Kolkata

Journey four hours by train from Farakka to Kolkata and be transferred to Taj Bangal.

DAY 11

Kolkata - Departure

Enjoy breakfast before being transferred to the airport for your onward journey.
